Based off of Gorege Ella Lyon's "Where I'm From"
Where I'm From by: Allysa Mclaughlin-Moyers
I'm from trailers,
from open space and beautiful land.
I'm from long showers and Suave
(Blue, thick,
It smelled like rivers.)
I'm from the swingset outside,
the firepit
whose ashes still smelled like dinner
when I was only four.
I'm from water and fresh rains,
from Fritz and Ginny,
from the Holy Ghost
with "my Father save me."
and the psalm I hold dear.
I'm from the property and Little Tyke
from ribs and stomach aches
from the measuring tape my brother broke
(It was my favorite toy.)
from Grandpa hlding me close
as if it were his last/
I'm from a country place
in a low down world
lost without the chance
to show everyone
that I belong
in a little place I call
my own.
