“Lisa I have no Choice. I’m sorry but I have to Leave” and with that Chad stormed out, leaving Lisa alone, a mess of tears rolling down her cheeks. Lisa watched as the door slammed shut, and could hear Chad’s heavy boots stomping up the stairs, one more slammed door before silence engulfed her. Chad was leaving. His protoon got called to fight in the war against Iraq and he was leaving two days from now. Lisa didn’t mean to get in a fight with him, it just happened, and now here she was alone and crying, as her husband packed his things to leave.
Chad sat on the edge of the bed, his head in his hands as they ran through his messy hair. Sighing heavily he glanced at the picture on the nightstand, a picture of Chad and Lisa at their wedding a few months ago. Chad hated breaking Lisa’s heart, but this was his job, he was the General of the navy for goodness sakes, and his protoon just happened to get drafted. He couldn’t say no, but he didn’t want to leave either. Either way, he had to; there was no way around it.
Two days later Chad and Lisa stood on the front steps in a tight embrace. Tears ran down both sets of cheeks as the whispered goodbyes into the night wind. A simple porch light illuminating their faces. The suitcases were packed, a taxi waiting by the curb, nothing left to say but goodbye.
By the time you read this I’ll already be on a plane. I love you with all my heart and I hated leaving you. I hope you understand why I had to. I can’t explain how much I miss you, but I hope this comes close:
In other words, don’t ever forget that I love you, and I will miss you every day that I’m gone.
I love you so much Lisa
-Chad McNamara
Sobbing, Lisa clutched the piece of paper to her heart half afraid that if she lets go, her world will crumble, but hasn’t it already?
“God I miss you” Lisa whispered into the air
Lisa tried to avoid watching the news, but somehow it always ended up on the TV. Reporting news of more soldiers injured, men dead, towns destroyed, and Lisa’s hope of Chad returning to her arms crumbling at her feet night after night. Then, that unforgivable day (where her world really does crumble), the call announcing he is gone.
A year later Lisa stood next to Chad’s grave, a single yellow daisy in her hands. The sun was just setting, casting a yellow glow over the land. Bending down, Lisa lights a single candle, a glow casting over the words;
Standing up Lisa sang’ Ill always leave a light on when your gone, something I you can rely on to get home, A naked light, a fire to keep us warm. I’ll always leave a light on when your gone, even if the daylight shines on, when it’s late at night, I can look inside, we wont feel so alone.’ Lisa whispered the last part, as a single tear fell.
A/n: this story is dedicated to all the people ones who lost a loved one in the war.

Light On
Never really said too much
Afraid it wouldn’t be enough
Just try to keep my spirits up
When there’s no point in grieving
Afraid it wouldn’t be enough
Just try to keep my spirits up
When there’s no point in grieving

Doesn’t matter anyway
Words could never make me stay
Words will never take my place
When you know I’m leaving
Words could never make me stay
Words will never take my place
When you know I’m leaving

Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
something I rely on to get home
one I can feel at night
A naked light, a fire to keep me warm
something I rely on to get home
one I can feel at night
A naked light, a fire to keep me warm

Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Even in the daylight, shine on
And when it’s late at night you can look inside
You won’t feel so alone
Even in the daylight, shine on
And when it’s late at night you can look inside
You won’t feel so alone

Sobbing, Lisa clutched the piece of paper to her heart half afraid that if she lets go, her world will crumble, but hasn’t it already?
“God I miss you” Lisa whispered into the air
You know we’ve been down that road
What seems a thousand times before
My back to a closing door and my eyes to the seasons
That roll out underneath my heels
And you don’t know how bad it feels
To leave the only one that I have ever believed in
What seems a thousand times before
My back to a closing door and my eyes to the seasons
That roll out underneath my heels
And you don’t know how bad it feels
To leave the only one that I have ever believed in
